Artworking Merleau-Ponty’s irrational
‘It is the mission of the twentieth century to elucidate the irrational.’
It’s been a couple of decades since the twentieth century. The twenty-first is shaping up to be just as protean as its predecessor, and faster. The ‘irrational’ has gone mainstream and emerged into modern discourse as populism though it would be a mistake to believe that opponents of the populists have some divine access to rationality and therby truth.
Late capitalism supplies a choice of ersatz utopias and will happily sell us an identity of our choosing, or even making. The God who died has been reborn in multiform…
None of this is to ‘elucidate the irrational’, it’s to embody it. Merleau-Ponty’s point still holds, his mission is still ours… or should be.
